A Future Without Cancer

On Thursday, September 17, 2015, more than 800 of the region's most enthusiastic community and civic leaders and other guests raised $6.8 million in support of cancer research and care at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and UPMC CancerCenter.

The gala featured a touching tribute in memory of one of our most passionate and caring supporters, Elsie Hillman, who passed away on August 4, 2015 at the age of 89. Rick Sebak from WQED-TV truly honored her ongoing commitment to improving the lives of others during his inspiring speech. Performances by the River City Brass Band to start off the night and Mo5aic, a five-man acapella group, engaged attendees throughout the evening. In addition, remarks were made by Sy Holzer who served as honorary chair and chair of the UPCI council, and is the president of PNC Pittsburgh, presenting sponsor of the event, along with Nancy Davidson, MD, and Stanley Marks, MD. Each inspired attendees with their message of celebrating the past 30 years of advancements in cancer research and care and hope for the future. Henry Hillman served alongside Cathy and Sy Holzer as honorary chairs, and Debbie and Frank Coonelly and Leslie and Jim Rutherford served as the evening’s co-chairs.

Celebrate! A Future Without CancerOn Thursday, October 17, 2014, more than 800 of the region's most enthusiastic community and civic leaders and other guests raised $3.4 million in support of cancer research and care at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and UPMC CancerCenter.

The gala featured a performance by the Vanessa German who shared an inspiring spoken word piece that she created specifically for the gala along with two performances by silhouette dance troup, Le Ombre. In addition, remarks from honorary chair and PNC Pittsburgh president Sy Holzer, chair of the UPCI Council, Dr. Nancy Davidson and Dr. Stanley Marks, while cancer survivor Terry George inspired all attendees with his story of triumph and hope. Henry and Elsie Hillman served as honorary chairs, and Rebecca Cost Snyder and Debbie and Frank Coonelly served as the evening’s co-chairs.

Living Courageously, A Future Without Cancer

On Thursday, October 24, 2013, more than 850 of the region's most enthusiastic community and civic leaders and other guests raised $4 million in support of cancer research at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.

The gala featured a performance by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under the direction of composer Robert Miller, who conducted some of the scores he wrote for UPMC commercials, as well as remarks from honorary chair and PNC Pittsburgh president Sy Holzer, chair of the UPCI Council. Henry and Elsie Hillman served as honorary chairs, and Christina and Carlos Cardoso and Rebecca Cost Snyder served as the evening's co-chairs.

Celebrate! A Future Without CancerOn Friday, September 14, 2012, more than 950 of the region's most enthusiastic community and civic leaders and other guests raised $5.5 million in support of cancer research at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.

The gala featured a performance by Chris Mann, a finalist on “The Voice,” as well as remarks from honorary chair and PNC Pittsburgh president Sy Holzer, chair of the UPCI Council. Henry and Elsie Hillman served as honorary chairs, and Becky and John Surma and Christina and Carlos Cardoso served as the evening's co-chairs.

Guests enjoyed performances by Jessica Lee and Tony Award winners Christine Ebersole and Brian Stokes Mitchell, and were charmed by the mistress of ceremonies, Michele Pawk. Dinner was prepared by ARAMARK Executive Chef Carl Van Wagner.

A Future Without CancerOn November 30, 2010, more than 800 of the region's top community and civic leaders and other guests raised millions of dollars in support of cancer research, prevention and patient care programs at the Hillman Cancer Center, the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, and UPMC CancerCenter.

Pittsburgh native David Conrad served as the Master of Ceremonies, and guests enjoyed performances by dancers Ade Obayami and Melissa Sandvig from television's So You Think You Can Dance and a showstopping medley of classic Motown hits from the evening's headliner, Gladys Knight. The delicious dinner was once again prepared by the UPMC Executive Kitchen.

The Power of Partnership: A Future Without CancerOn October 6, 2009, 650 of the region’s most influential community and civic leaders and other guests celebrated more than $3.6 million in funds raised for cancer research, prevention and patient care programs at the Hillman Cancer Center, the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, and UPMC CancerCenter.

With Pittsburgh native Michael Keaton as the Master of Ceremonies, guests enjoyed a selection of songs performed by Emmy-award winning actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth, a performance by dancers from the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School, and a delicious dinner prepared by UPMC Executive Chef Brad Kelly and his team.

Destination Hope - A Future Without CancerOn Oct. 4, 2007 more than 900 supporters of UPMC CancerCenter and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute gathered at Pittsburgh International Airport’s FBO Aviation Center to celebrate the advances in cancer prevention, detection, and treatment being made at Hillman Cancer Center. The event, hosted by honorary chair Teresa Heinz Kerry, and general chairs Susan and Michael Boyle and Bonnie and Tom VanKirk, generated $6 million in sponsorships and contributions for cancer research and patient care.
